CIRCLES
AND TRADITIONS
What is the
Moms and Mentors' Circle?
It's a chance for
moms, their family, friends and mentors to get together as a group.
What happens
at the circle?
It's a group decision
and everyone has a chance to contribute! Sometimes we'll do crafts, go swimming
or go out for walks in the park or just visit. There's always a lot to talk
about with children.
How do I get invited?
If you're interested
in coming, please contact the Moms and Mentors' Coordinators, either Maureen
478-6658 or Maggie 642-5152 or Mary 642-1600. Also, a member of the group
volunteers to phone everyone, and usually calls before each meeting.
Who are the mentors?
Mentors are like
the 'favorite auntie' who spends time with young moms and their families,
assisting them in the challenges of parenting. Mentors receive special training
on health information and positive parenting practices in preparation for
providing guidance, advocacy and support for young families. Mentors also
encourage young parents to continue their education and assist them in accessing
scholarships for post secondary education. Above all, mentors assist young
families in a nurturing, resourceful and non-judgmental way. Mentoring relationships
value friendships among parents and foster mutual respect between moms and
mentors.
TRADITIONS
- Cookie Exchange: In December, mentors bake and decorate cookies for
young parents. Whenever possible, moms and mentors get together to prepare
the cookies.
- Spring Walk: In February or March, moms, mentors and children enjoy
an annual walk in the park.
- Scholarships: In May, young parents prepare applications for post
secondary scholarships sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Project
Upgrade. Maureen Hobbs is the volunteer advocate for these programs.
- Picnic at Royal Roads: In June, everyone joins in for sandwiches in
the park, among the geese and peacocks.
- Knights of Columbus Barbecue: In Sept.and or June, the Knights barbecue
burgers at Belmont Secondary while moms and mentors sell them to staff
and students at the school.
- Mentor Meetings: held monthly for ongoing support and education related
to current parenting information and mentor relationships. The Western
Communities gives thanks Nicky Reid and Co. for sponsoring their dinner
from Villages Pizza. Feminist group process is practiced at each meeting.
- Moms and Mentors' Circles: a discussion and activity group held
monthly for parents, mentors, and their children. The discussion group
is co-facilitated by mentors and focuses on the special interests of
parents. (Western Communities…pizzas are enjoyed by all, compliments
